Charleston Attractions – Charleston Tea Plantation

There are lots of Charleston attractions. From the historical sites in downtown to the many world-class dining options, Charleston is truly one of the best cities to visit in the South. For a more unique Charleston attraction, try getting out of the city and exploring the areas right around Charleston. One unique place to visit is the Charleston Tea Plantation located on the historic and unspoiled Wadmalaw Island in South Carolina’s low country. The Charleston Tea Plantation is known as the only tea plantation in the US and is owned by Bigelow Tea. There are a few ways to explore the plantation. The best way is is take a trolley tour through the 127 acre farm. The tour allows you to see the over 320 varieties of tea plants in the various growth stages. The tour is led by a seasoned tea plantation trolley driver who provides a fun and educational experience by sharing their knowledge on the history of the Plantation and the production of the tea. Before you hop on the trolley, help yourself to some free American Classic Tea to take with you on the trolley ride! Tours generally last around 35 to 40 minutes and run throughout the day. Tickets for the trolley tour are $10 for 12 years and up and $5 for children under 12.

Another way to explore the tea plantation is to take a factory tour where you can see up close how the plants are used to produce the tea. If you are visiting during the peak season, you may also get to see all the stages of the production process. The Bigelows themselves will be your guide (through flat screen TVs) through a glass tourway that overlooks the factory. If you are an avid tea drinker, you will enjoy getting to learn about the different processes to produce different types of teas. The factory tour is free and you are not required to take the trolley tour in order to go on the factory tour.

Be sure to visit the Plantation Gift Shop before you leave where you can purchase unique gifts and, of course, some tea to take home with you. Or just help yourself to another cup of complimentary iced American Classic Tea to take on the road with you!

The Charleston Tea Plantation is open 7 days a week (with the exception of a few holidays) and is a unique experience for the whole family. The Plantation also allows picnics while on your tour the gardens or outside the gift shop. Experience the Charleston lowcountry by making The Charleston Tea Plantation part of your itinerary while on your Charleston vacation. One of the best downtown Charleston hotels, the staff at French Quarter Inn can provide directions to the Plantation as well as give you information on some other places to visit during your day trip to Wadmawlaw Island.
